Essential Elements
Teaching Series Synopsis
One of the highlights of our time in Pathway was a team of people that assembled to shape the teaching series that we experienced on Sundays. In January 2009 we put together the “Essential Elements” series that considered the essentials that need to be in place if we are to live lives that are growing with passion for Christ.
Text: Luke 9:23-27Luke 9:23-27
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV
23 And he said unto all, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whosoever would save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man profited, if he gain the whole world, and lose or forfeit his own self? 26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in his own glory, and [the glory] of the Father, and of the holy angels. 27 But I tell you of a truth, There are some of them that stand here, who shall in no wise taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

Summary: In this 1st teaching we consider what it means to live a passionate life for Christ. Is our life characterized by approaching Christ with a minimalist attitude, or are we aligning everything in our life to pursue Him?
Text: Acts 2:42-47Acts 2:42-47
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV
42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 45 and they sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all, according as any man had need. 46 And day by day, continuing stedfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart, 47 praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to them day by day those that were saved.

Summary: In part 2 of this series we consider the essential disciplines that must be in place if we are to live out that passion. Specifically, we investigate the early church and the activities they engaged in to live out their passion for Christ.
Text: Acts 1:6-8Acts 1:6-8
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV
6 They therefore, when they were come together, asked him, saying, Lord, dost thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know times or seasons, which the Father hath set within His own authority. 8 But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Summary: In this teaching we consider who are the people in our life God is calling us to influence for His Kingdom. When God establishes His passion in our hearts and we position that passion to grow through thespiritual disciplines, we begin to feel the burden to reach the world with the Gospel. But how are we to see the world?
Text: Acts 6:1-7Acts 6:1-7
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV
6 1 Now in these days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a murmuring of the Grecian Jews against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. 2 And the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not fit that we should forsake the word of God, and serve tables. 3 Look ye out therefore, brethren, from among you seven men of good report, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. 4 But we will continue stedfastly in prayer, and in the ministry of the word. 5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus a proselyte of Antioch; 6 whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands upon them. 7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem exceedingly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Summary: For any strategy to take off there has to be the practical execution of resources. Every strategy considers the return on investment that can be made by leveraging our time, finances, relationships, and talents for God’s Kingdom. But what is the difference and similarities between the way a business and a church strategize?
Pathway was a church plant located on the NE side of Indianapolis, Indiana. Started in 2004 and closed in 2009, this short and amazing journey was filled with joys, sorrows, victories, and trials. While we were deeply grieved that we had to close the organization of Pathway, we are eternally grateful to the many families that became life long friends who, to this day, walk the path with us to God’s best.
Many of the resources on this site were developed during the life of Pathway. Our hope is that these resources will further serve to extend God’s Kingdom into the minds and hearts of all that find them useful.
Approach to teachingWith 11 years of pastoral experience, I’ve had the opportunity to be on the bleeding edge of what God is doing and how He is expanding His Kingdom today. One of those opportunities has been to pastor 2 different churches. When teaching in these contexts I regularly ask, “How do I live this on Tuesday?” I believe every teaching should draw from the authority of Scripture, leverage the wealth of wisdom in church history, while speaking to the circumstances and rhythms of our day.
