Music calms me

Posted on April 20, 2011 by Bethany 6 Comments

Singing is integral to my life. I feel music like nothing else. Music moves me, calms me, focuses me…and brings joy into my soul. If I’m stressed out or filled with anxiety, I’ve discovered that I sing songs I learned as a child: songs from Sunday school and Children’s church like…

Jesus Loves Me
Jesus Loves Even Me
Jesus Loves the Little Children
The B-I-B-L-E
Apple Red Happiness
The Devil is a Sly Old Fox

These songs are filled with a theology I didn’t recognize as a child, but, as an adult they help fix my attention on Christ.

I’m now a mom, and I’m trying to teach my children songs. I want lyrics to sink into their souls so that they will never forget.  Songs that teach them about Jesus, the disciples, the order of the New Testament, the fruits of the Spirit, etc. I want to bestow on them the wealth of God’s Word thru music.

Below are a variety of CDs (with links to Amazon) that capture some of the songs we want our kids to learn:

Veggie Tales - 25 Sunday School Songs
Veggie Tales - Here I am to Worship
Veggie Tales - Worship Songs
Scripture Memory Songs
Growing in God’s Word
Cedarmont Kids - Action Bible Songs
Cedarmont Kids - Hymns
Cedarmont Kids - 100 Sing-along-songs

We’d love to know what CDs and/or songs you’ve discovered!

We like Steve Green’s “Hide ‘Em in Your Heart” – Scripture verses set to music.

Go Fish has some fun upbeat albums with good messages that we like to “dance” to. :)

Thanks for you posts Bethany! They are challenging, interesting, fun, etc. Do you have any strategies for teaching kids (and their parents) to keep their rooms clean?

    • Jill, thanks for your music addition and encouraging feedback!

About cleaning rooms. We reward with an allowance for Andrew and Olivia making their beds and cleaning their rooms each day. We have a chart on their bulletin boards with a picture of their goal and how many days that they need to successfully clean their room to earn it. It has worked really well. They earn .25 each day (see http://captureyesterday.com/site/how-we-do-allowances/)

Trouble has arisen in the family room when they don’t think that room requires a thorough picking up, and we differ. Milo wrote a post on taking toys away and making them earn them back (see http://captureyesterday.com/site/i-made-her-cry/).

What works for your 4 kiddos at their varying ages?

“Here here” on Hide ‘em in Your Hearts. There are three volumes: the first two are pretty similar; the third is more praise & worship in flavor.

We home-school our kids and use them in Bible class in coordination with their lessons. Great material!

    Bethany,
We use a marble system for allowance. We award a certain number of marbles for tasks completed. The marbles are converted to cash on payday. We determine the worth of a task by how well it was done (keeping age in mind), time or difficulty of job, attitude it was done with, etc. Unfortunately we have failed to apply this to the cleaning of rooms. I think I’m going to work on that.

Thanks again for all your inspiration!

Greetings from Wordwise Hymns. And thanks for your post. I agree with what you’re saying: that it’s important to teach our children soul-enriching gospel songs and hymns, and that recalling these in future time will be a blessing.

You also make another important point: that we won’t appreciate the depth of doctrine in these songs until later. But that shouldn’t deter parents and Christian leaders from teaching them.

    Good post. God bless.

    • Robert,

Thanks so much for taking the time to post a response about the importance of music and the responsibility we as parents have to teach our children through song. Your post encouraged my morning!

      Bethany
